Chief Machickanee of the Menominees, in the late 1800’s is reputed to have worn a Prince Albert coat, high hat, and loin cloth on ceremonial occasions. He pitched his teepee for hunting south of the river at present day Stiles. To an Oconto girl, Lena McCartney, went the distinction of having a village, Lena, named after her. It happened when her financee, George Hall, the postmaster of Oconto was asked to suggest a name for a hamlet within his jurisdiction. |
